In 2020, at the height of Covid, I (Amy Sturdivant, Writer/Director) wandered out to explore remote areas to escape isolation. When I stumbled upon the Lake Delores waterpark, the song ‘99 Luftballons’ rang through my head, and the story of The Weight of Air rushed in. I imagined a war set in this place that once held joy. The age-old message surrounding the paranoia and misunderstanding of people different than ourselves still rings true today, and seemingly gets louder with time. It is my hope to bring an untainted perspective to the story in following the innocence and purity of two young children born to conflicting sides, and their ability to see the other’s humanity amongst the chaos.

Where did this story begin?

Our Hope & Mission

The amount of division in this world is palpable. Humanity has become desensitized towards violence and hate, and ignorance has turned fear into ticking time-bombs.

Our mission to explore how innocence can challenge division and remind us all of our shared humanity.

Simple Themes

Hatred is inherited & compassion is instinctual.

Innocence sees humanity over ideology.

Children inherit the consequences of adult conflict.

There is shared humanity amongst enemies.

Lasting impact

The Weight of Air emerges as an invitation to confront the human toll of conflict. To inspire audiences to pause, reflect, and regain empathy for those on the “other side.” Together we can bridge the divides that separate, and reignite our shared humanity.
